This anthology gathers American short stories by writers including Nathaniel Hawthorne, Anna Katharine Green, James Fenimore Cooper, and Edgar Allan Poe. Its selections range across different subjects and styles, offering a varied introduction to short fiction from the period.

Historical tales sit alongside science fiction, melodrama, and philosophical stories. Rather than following one plot or cast of characters, the collection moves from one author’s approach to another, making it suited to listeners who enjoy sampling distinct voices and kinds of storytelling.

This is the first volume in a three-volume anthology. The range of genres gives the collection its character, while each story can be heard on its own.

Mr Larry Greene is one of the most talented readers I have heard. Sean Grabosky was wonderful as well. Mike Pelton is always most enjoyed. I am so thankful to all readers. I enjoy Lynne Thomson’s reads also. I so enjoyed all the stories although I had a hard time understanding some.
