When We Two Parted
Lu par LibriVox Volunteers
In “When We Two Parted,” a speaker looks back on a secret separation and the silence that has followed. The memory is still painful, sharpened by the knowledge that the other person’s name is now linked to shame.
Byron’s short lyric moves between the moment of parting and the speaker’s present-day recollection. Its restrained voice and recurring images of cold, silence, and grief give the poem the feel of a private confession.
Written in the early nineteenth century, the poem explores lost intimacy, secrecy, and the lasting weight of betrayal. Its compact form makes it a brief, focused listen, with much of its force carried by rhythm and repetition.

The recording captures all manner of noises from the narrator's through. It wouldn't be a bad reading, but for all the sounds.
