The New Atlantis
von Francis Bacon
Gelesen von Bill Boerst
After a ship is driven off course in the Pacific, its crew reaches Bensalem, an unfamiliar island whose people offer shelter and a glimpse of an unusually ordered society.
As the visitors learn about Bensalem’s customs and institutions, the story turns to Salomon’s House, a center devoted to investigating nature and applying knowledge. Through this imagined institution, Francis Bacon sets out a vision of organized inquiry and the role it might play in public life.
Part travel narrative and part philosophical fiction, New Atlantis is an unfinished work published after Bacon’s death. Its island society reflects his hopes for learning, civic order, and the advancement of knowledge, making it a distinctive early work of speculative fiction.

Enjoyable

It was an enjoyable story, though the description leaves out the first half of it being about a unknown land of Christian peoples. The description of the scientific laboratory is not until the last two chapters and is only part off the story.

The truth is stranger than the supposed “fiction”. Well read Sir!
