Dogs and All About Them

Robert Leighton’s Dogs and All About Them is an early twentieth-century guide to dogs, covering their care and the characteristics of different breeds.
Organized as a systematic survey, the book describes individual breeds and includes notes on dogs shown in competitions. Its focus is practical and classificatory, reflecting a period when breed standards and dog shows were central to how many readers learned about dogs.
Listeners interested in the history of dog-keeping, breed descriptions, or older animal-care writing will find a detailed portrait of how dogs were understood and presented in 1910.

The author was a dog lover and ?breeder in a small way. He gives us a very brief history of dogs, then starts explaining the various ones in Great Britain during the late 1800s. Each chapter talks about one breed, or sometimes two closely related breeds, gives what is known about the history of them, describes what their purpose was, their appearance, (and why it was better 20 years ago,) then the gossip. I think the author knew everyone associated with purebred dogs in the North of England and most of Scotland; and he knows the names of their dogs. So the book see-saws between interesting and soporific. The narration is excellent.
