Humour of the North
Read by LibriVox Volunteers
Humour of the North is a 1912 anthology of comic writing by Canadian authors, assembled by Lawrence J. Burpee. Rather than attempt a complete survey of Canadian wit, it offers a selection of pieces by writers considered representative of the country’s literary humor.
The collection brings together work that may be familiar to Canadian readers, while offering listeners a glimpse of the comic writing circulating in Canada at the time. Its range and variety come from the anthology format: this is a gathering of individual voices, not a single continuous story.
A useful choice for listeners interested in early Canadian literature and humor, the book also reflects its editor’s modest aim: to present a small, welcoming sample from a much larger field.
