The Authentic Death Of Sherlock Holmes
John McCarty
On August 3, 1922, less than 6 months after the station went on the air, WGY (Schenectady, NY) presented a locally-produced radio drama called THE WOLF. It was the first radio drama broadcast in this country. By September of that year, radio drama had become a weekly feature on WGY. As a result of the success of the CBS Radio Mystery Theatre, a brand new series of original dramas produced and aired six nights a week nationally beginning in January 1974, the long-dormant radio drama enjoyed a brief revival, and WGY, which had given birth to radio drama and now aired the CBS Radio Mystery Theatre, decided to try its hand at the form again with an original of its own, the first to be produced at the station in almost three decades. Titled THE AUTHENTIC DEATH OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, it aired on WGY in June of 1975 and was such a ratings winner for the station that WGY repeated the program the following year. This is the original recording of the show, which was produced for WGY by John Mangan and written and directed by John McCarty. Nationally known announcer Hy Agens headed the cast, supported by local actors Bruce Hallenbeck, Steven Albrizzi, Karen Bernhard and Chuck Winans.
This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.
