A dark and moody collection of poems, influenced by the author's experience of nature, rather than an idealized notion of it. "The uncrowned King of Bohemia," as his friends called him, published this work against much public criticism. Summary by Assaf Koss.

Sterling is litetary inheritor to Ambrose Bierce and guide to Clark Ashton Smith--while his output is slender and restricted to poetry, he is important for fans of Bierce and/or Smith. All three are San Francisco writers with Decadent leanings and an interest in the fantastic, from the macabre to the sublime.
