The Chronicles of Crime Vol 1
Gelesen von Kevin Green
Camden Pelham
This catalogue of human weakness and at times downright atrocity has been brought together by Camden Pelham, a barrister-at-law of the Inner Temple during the second half of the 19th century. It is given in chronological order, the first case listed is from 1700, and the final case in Volume 1 being in 1816. Some of the most famous cases of the age are listed, from Dick Turpin and Captain Kidd, to the assassination of Spencer Perceval MP, and the Luddites. Some cases will shock with descriptions of horrific murders, whilst others will amuse with the idiocy of the perpetrators. These 275 cases give a fascinating insight into life during 18th and 19th century Britain. (Summary by Kevin Green) (10 hr 19 min)

interesting book re early crime and punishment
MrMarkN4CC
Very well read. Quite an education in early crime and punishment and also the court system of early England. Some of the punishment is scarier than some of the rather brutal crime. A good listen when you only have 20-30 minutes or when doing some project and having this running in the background.
Interesting and well performed.

Notice, if you will, that these capital offenders were simply, "turned off."
fascinating chronicles of times past

This is a curiously compelling compendium of crimes and punishments. It’s a little hard going in places due to the anachronistic language but the reader is clear and well measured and does a great job with it. Nice to see northern English place name’s pronounced properly on LibriVox! Some of these tales feel like fillers to make up pages but many are fascinating insights into the times and some are most gruesome. It’s fascinating how “the bloody code” was instituted and how little one needed to do to be executed, and how barbarically women were treated - with special forms of punishment for them.
a time machine!

This window into the historic reality of English criminals and their appointments with fate is a constant source of education, entertainment and evidence of human development in comparison to todays laws and sentencing. It is relieving to know that there is no danger of me being hung at Tyburn for having a dirty face today! I recommend this special reality show very highly.
