Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeare's famous tragedy of two "star-crossed lovers" from rival houses. Romeo and Juliet meet at a party and fall instantly in love, realizing too late that their families, the Montagues and the Capulets, are mortal enemies. Braving parental opposition, the teenage lovers marry in secret, with the aid of the well-intentioned Friar Lawrence. Yet, as Shakespeare has often observed, the course of true love does not run smoothly, and Romeo and Juliet must risk death to be together. (summary by Elizabeth Klett)

This is a sensitive, highly dramatic, and very well enunciated reading by a wonderful cadre of Librivox volunteers. Some of these folks must to do a LOT of readings, since I encounter them again and again. Deep thanks to all of you for making this important contribution to the literary experience.

A famous play, read wonderfully

A very good reading, with a lot of different characters. Most of the voices are different enough that you can see the characters easily, so it's good to follow it. I only had a hard time with Friar Lawrence and Romeo's father. I think that the reading could've used of a bit more interpretation, but this is pretty standard for these recordings, and I think that that could only be truly solved with an actual play. As for the story itself... Was the world different! A little bit of patience and discretion would've solved the entire thing, but they're too hot blooded for that. Not sure if i should call this a tale of love or a tale of madness, but it's certainly a bit of both. Makes me question the nature of "love" itself, and they being so young definitely doesn't help to keep a good view to it. Classic Shakespeare in regard to the many deaths that happen, but at least the original conflict is somewhat fixed in the end. PS: Why make a statue of them?! It makes no sense!

Quick and Interesting

I love the voices I think they certainly fit their parts. Many of my friends have said that this book is boring but this reading made it a quick and interesting experience.

I think I read this in high school 30 years go. I didn't appreciate it then, but now, especially with such excellent & dramatic reading, now I understand why it's famous. Beautiful, & tragic.
