Gustave Flaubert
After completing the famous Mme Bovary, Flaubert put all his efforts into researching the Punic Wars and completed the lesser known Salammbô. In this volume, Flaubert describes in detail the Mercenary Revolt and the fight of the Mercenaries against the all-powerful Carthage, the theft of the magical Zaimph and the love and hate between the Carthaginian princess Salammbô and the fiercest leader of the Mercenaries, Matho. Loved it!

This brought these ancient times alive to me more vividly than any recounting of historical facts. Fantastic!

Difficult to follow the narrative with these painfully clipped intonations. Strained syllables squeeze out without rhythm or flow.
Two sections reversed
TwinkieToes
Sections 31 and 32 are reversed. Section 31 is Chapter 14, part 4; section 32 is Chapter 14, part 3. The characters weren't very well developed in this story. I didn't feel much sympathy for any of them; they were very flat to me. Lots of description of war - graphic gore and violence. The reading was good; I had to speed up playback because it was too slow for me and was starting to lull me to sleep. :)
A superb reading of this classic book

Sincere thanks for this superb reading of my favourite work by Flaubert. The clear, measured reading and rich voice of the reader are all very much appreciated.
