Surprisingly Very Good!
Avid Listener
I wasn't sure what to expect and decided to listen to this obscure book based on the comments, and was very surprised at how good it was -- from beginning to end! It's got a lot to offer: great story, adventure, beautifully defined Arab culture and landscape of the Algerian desert, and a bit of good philosophy. At first I thought I was not going to like the predominant reader from Ontario, but I think now he's one of my favorites. He mixes up the character dialog in a very interesting and subtle way and does a great female voice. And the book is long, which helped me for several nights from my bad habit of watching USA's horrible cable tv! Highly recommend!

This story starts out a bit slow but picks up the pace very quickly. It has romance, adventure and intrigue in it. I enjoyed the story and the narration was good. Some different narrators but Jules Hawryluk narrated most of it and he has a really nice tone to his voice. Please keep up the good work Jules! Be warned there are some very racially insensitive words used in this story, unfortunately, I am sure in the 1800's they were used.
Quite a good story!

Very easy to follow all the details. Super interesting to get a glimpse of the history of the region and its people. I come away from these old books realizing that we humans are the same and that there is nothing new under the sun. The world may seem to be unraveling around us, but we'll move on from this season to another. Best to make what little has to do with you a good place.
Hidden gem

How unexpectedly enjoyable! A very engaging story, so despite the main reader's horrible reading (he sounds as if he's being forced to read, & really resents it) I thoroughly enjoyed it. I just wish one of the other male readers would have done the whole thing.
over done melodrama

I have listened to other books by this author & enjoyed them, but this one doesn’t measure up to the others. Narration was fine, but the story line was hard to endure.
riveting story
Allij
generally well read though the chapters read by the lady who obviously has English as a second language were a bit painful
slow but good

It started out really slow then picked up and was really good at the end. Jules is a splendid reader!
