Good narrator, average book

(2,5 Sterne)

I really enjoyed the narrator, but the actual book is average: the author keeps mixing historical facts with personal opinions and feels a strong need to pass judgement on many historical figures based on his own contemporary (and christian) moral values. These facts detract the reader from fully understanding the protagonists, their characters and motives in their historical context.

Great narration

(4 Sterne)

Narrator did a great job, and the book is okay if your intention is to know general themes about the life of Julius Caesar, but it is heavily influenced by author's opinion about religion and morality, as can be easily seen by his metaphors.

Superb narration

(5 Sterne)

A very good introduction to the life of Julius Caesar. Some reviewers complained that the author injected his own moral opinions in the story. But one school of thoughts shows that's precisely the role of historians, take the examples of Gibbon and Macaulay. The reader Cathy Barratt is superb, better than some professional audio book narrators. I plan to listen to every book she has narrated so far. What an intoxicating experience.

A brief but quality introduction

(5 Sterne)

Not long enough to give much detail, but it's a nice starting point on the subject that gives a decent background and introduces a lot of the major players. On a different note, I liked the slightly antiqued prose too. Sure it felt overly formal at times, but it was enjoyable to listen to well-constructed sentences.

Superb reading, not superb book

(4 Sterne)

As somebody said great reader but book has flaws in form of too much personal opinions of the author of the book. His christian approach to suicide threw me off. How could he judge Kato and others?

Great Read!!!

(5 Sterne)

This "History of Julius Caesar" is concise and factual. Cathy is an excellent reader and her voice makes it even better than it was written. One of my favorite things from Librivox. Terry Dallas Texas

Great reading

(5 Sterne)

Thank you, Cathy Barratt, for any excellent reading. Very good pacing, expression and pronunciation. The book is a high level summary but every history contains different emphasis and style, so it's well worth the listening.

History of Julius Caesar

Good book but a lot of here-say. On multiple occasions I kept hearing "It is said", "It was rumored" etc. Hard to distinguish fact from fiction.
