The hero, Etienne Gerard, is a Hussar in the French Army during the Napoleonic Wars. Gerard's most notable attribute is his vanity - he is utterly convinced that he is the bravest soldier, greatest swordsman, accomplished horseman and gallant lover in all France. Gerard is not entirely wrong since he displays notable bravery on many occasions, but his self-satisfaction undercuts this quite often. As one reviewer noted, it is not what one expects from ACD, but this is only further proof of his versatile greatness. Gerard combines the egoism of Hercule Poirot with the panache and invincibility of James Bond to give us a perfectly delightful and unforgetable character. Kudos to the reader for a perfect rendering of the personality of Gerard.

Very good narration. Best I have listened to with ACD’s books. This book is even more proof that, I after reading all of the Sherlock Holmes was wrong when I said that never again would a book satisfy me. ACD so very cleverly depicts brigadier Gerard and people around me would glance at me as I snorted aloud in derision at his own very high opinion of himself, and the way ACD depicts him as also believing himself to be modest. A must read!

This is a wonderful book: cavalier tales of Napoleonic days from a very vane officer of the Hussars which adds humour to the colourful stories. Phil Griffiths does a great job of capturing the Bigadier's conceited but honourable and exciting exploits. Many thanks!!!

The story is interesting and humorous. Gerard is so humble. I wouldn't enjoy reading this book myself with all of the French names but this reader reads so clearly and well that I was able to multitask through the whole book. Thank you!

I really enjoyed this delightful tale of Brigadier Gerard and the series of exploits and adventures that he undertook during the Napoleonic wars. The stories were very well read by Phil Griffiths.

The reader is clear and pleasant to listen to. It took me a chapter to get used to the voice, but he reads well enough to forget the adjustment period

Arthur Conan Doyle has a genius for storytelling in various styles and even this conceited way of self elevating of Gérard's is pleasant to hear from the authors pen.
