It has been said that behind every successful man is a good woman. This is certainly true in the case of James Orlebar Cloyster. However, some funny things happened on his road to success. His story is humorously told from the point of view of several parties involved.

According to Wikipedia, the book is a humorous, fictionalized account of Wodehouse's early years as a journalist, with Wodehouse being portrayed by the character of Cloyster. (Summary by Debra Lynn) (5 hr 5 min)

Light comedy about the struggle to achieve literary success

(4 Sterne)

This light comedy about a struggling writer's attempts to achieve literary success is amusing and easy to listen to. It is not the funniest Wodehouse I have listened to, but I was glad I stayed to the end as Eva absolutely cracked me up. This is a solo project. DebraLynn doesn't use character voices. Her reading is a nice balance of steady and animated. (Wodehouse's humor is all the more funny for DebraLynn's matter of fact delivery.) I regularly seek her out as a Librivox reader because I know the story will be well told and the sound quality will be excellent.

I enjoyed the reader for this story. Typically Wodehouse writes characters that make various mistakes but still have many endearing qualities. Unfortunately, the main character in this story remains pretty awful throughout the narrative. There are humorous situations and funny/convoluted social dynamics which make the story entertaining despite the main character. Also, Margaret in the first chapter alone could almost make the whole book worth listening to.

Eh, could have been better

I am a huge Wodehouse fan, and this book just kind of let me down. I am used to at least a few chuckles in a Wodehouse, but this one was more drama, not so much humor. It's still an okay book, but not one I'd go out of my way to hear again. Reader was fine.

The title kept this book on the bottom of my list .I am so glad that I listened …. It was a delight. The author is a favorite and the reader is great.

NOT VINTAGE WODEHOUSE

This would be much better if I had not been familiar with Jeeves and Bertie. The reader was very understandable and had a good volume, something often lacking in the recordings.

Why did I listen twice?? Because I couldn’t believe this was a P.G. Wodehouse story based on how it was narrated - perhaps some styles are better suited than others.

Superb!

not as laugh out loud funny as some of his other stories but entertaining non the less... reader was clear and strong voiced

What a rollercoaster!!!

I wanted to abruptly stop listening when thinking this was autobiographical but I'm glad I continued, enthralled.
