John Carter, an American Civil War veteran, goes prospecting in Arizona and, when set upon by Indians, is mysteriously transported to Mars, called "Barsoom" by its inhabitants. Carter finds that he has great strength on this planet, due to its lesser gravity. Carter soon falls in among the Tharks, a nomadic tribe of the planet's warlike, four-armed, green inhabitants. Thanks to his strength and combat abilities he rises in position in the tribe and earns the respect eventually the friendship of Tars Tarkas, one of the Thark chiefs. (7 hr 26 min)

This is the first of the Barsoom series by ERB. I am reading them (okay listening to them) all in order. John Carter is an adventurer of earth who mysteriously finds himself on Mars. There, he is captured by the green men of Mars called the Tharks, but he is strong, and wins notoriety and riches for himself. He also meets Dejah Thoris, the princess of Helium, whom he falls in love with. He escapes with her only to be separated from her and find himself captured by another band of Tharks. Whew what a ride! Reading was excellent.

Not normally a genre i delve into much, but i am very glad i took on chance on this novel; would recommend for everyone, all ages.

if a (bad) western soap opera in space that lacks imagination and pretty much just lays the American West over an alien land and culture then this is the book for you. John Carter is not a sympathetic character and I found myself rooting against him before finally becoming bored and giving up. the dialogue is almost but not quite amusingly wooden and archaic. it is only because he was writing from a position of nearly absolute ignorance of the settings of his stories that can somewhat excuse how bad these are.

John Carter's Barsoom adventures are frankly preposterous, even for Burroughs' day when people thought there might really be canals on Mars. However, the story has a momentum that propels it too fast to allow the reader to reflect on the inconsistencies of the plot or of the world Burroughs created. The constant cliffhangers and mild titillation gave the book great popularity among several generations of readers, including a number of science fiction writers who cited it as an important early influence.
