Our Island Story, Part 1
Gelesen von Kara Shallenberg (1969-2023)
Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall
Our Island Story was first published in 1905 and became an instant classic. Beginning with the Romans and following the triumphs and foibles of the good, not so good and the downright despicable figures of history; we are treated to a dazzling montage of kings, queens, barons, knights, explorers, movers and shakers that have played a key role in the history of England. Marshall freely mixes folk tale with historical fact and in so doing paints a very vivid picture of the past in a style reminiscent of all that is finest in the children’s story telling tradition. This is the first section of that work and will carry you from the time when Tacitus first sang the praises of Britannica to his Roman readers up to the vicious and bloodthirsty confusion that is the War of the Roses (about 1500 years). Kara does wonderful work with this history. She makes it a pleasure to listen. I love the 'stories' and it's a wonderful way to refresh English History. Really Kara is a very special lady in all she has done for Librivox. Thanks very much Kara.

I've read the first half of this book to my kids and my reading left a lot to be desired. I was so glad to find this book here. I saved it to my computer and then burned it to a CD. We now listen to it in the car and the kids LOVE it!!! Great job in every part of this book! I do hope you can will do more!

This helps immensely. I've been letting my kids listen to this book on our rides in the car and its great. Much better than me reading it to them.

As its name implies, this is not a scholarly history, but a series of history stories. Marshall does not investigate the socio-political background behind events or apply economic theory to the past. Instead she tells the legend of Boudica in the same narrative style as a story about the signing of the Magna Carta. I thought that this would be dry, but it's a mix of history and myth narrated in a very charming way. I will certainly listen to the next half.
