John Bagnell Bury
J.B. Bury wrote his “History of Greece” before World War I, but it is such a good overview of classical Greek history that the third edition was still being used as a college textbook in the late 1960′s. In the newer editions, a co-author rewrote the material dealing with the early centuries where there have been new archeological developments, but the later chapters and Bury’s framework were retained essentially unchanged. Bury writes in a lucid, easily understood style that entertains as it educates. The book covers artistic and literary development, as well as politics and war, and its field of view includes western Asia Minor, the Agean archipelago, and “Greater Greece” (Sicily and Southern Italy). Bury's love of ancient Greek history is infectious. He draws us into the dawn of modern European cultural, political, and philosophical life by detailing their development out of the dramas, intruiges, and conflicts that shaped the Hellenic world. His perspectives on his historic subjects are enriched by revealing hints of his own place in history, offering his readers the opportunity to reflect on how our attitudes to imperial conquest have evolved over the century since he originally wrote this seminal text. We are invited to lose ourselves in his enthusiasm for the details of the birth of European civilisation, so we might find ourselves better equipped to critically engage with the development of that ongoing project.
excellent!! highly recommended
all readers do a great job.
Graham Redman... I really appreciate your narration and the time you put in to speaking clearly and specifically . And as far as differences of pronounced words between different readers... It's a free source of information. if you don't know the proper pronunciations... look it up
Thank you so much
Really motivates me to find a good on line map of the wars in Sicily. Also , a nice end summary of Macedonian army postings in Asia

Great content; difficult to listen to reader for Ch 15 and especially painful in Ch 16 parts 1- 5. Sorry, I tried many times….
