Simon Dubnow
Simon Dubnow was born in 1860 to a poor Jewish family in Belarussian town of Mstsislaw and later became authority of Jewish history and an activist. Due to his Jewish origin, he had to move to St.Petersburg, Odessa, Vilna(Lithuania), St.Petersburg(2nd time), Kaunas(Lithuania), Berlin and finally Riga(Latvia) after Hitler came to power. When Nazi troops occupied Latvia 1941, he was moved with thousands of other Jews to Riga ghetto and was eventually killed. His life is a symbol of Jewish suffering in Eastern Europe in the first half of 20 century. This book is one of the most extensive and thorough study of the glory and suffering of the Jews in Russia and Poland for 2000 years. - Summary by S. S. Kim (14 hr 52 min)

I started listening to this because I’ve been doing a study of the history of Judaism . Several weeks after starting the book the conflict between Russia and Ukraine began . This has been very helpful in understanding not only Jewish history but political and regional history . I’ve also expanded my listening to other LibriVox Russian and Eastern European related readings . The material is dense and the reader’s first language is not English .I was determined to use the resource and not get discouraged .I went to another wonderful online site, Project Gutenberg , found the print version and followed along with Mr. Kim through about two thirds of the first volume . Once accustomed to his cadence and pronunciations I was able to just listen . I appreciate his taking the time to volunteer reading . I learned a lot . It is worth the effort to stay with the material through all three volumes .
