A lesser known novel by the sensational English novelist, Charlotte's Inheritance opens in Paris in a dilapidated boarding house let to students by a scarcely adequate landlady. Enter Gustave, a young provincial, arriving in Paris supposedly to study law, but in reality as the proposed husband of the dour and unattractive daughter of his sponsor. Unable to tolerate the life arranged for him, Gustave quits the boarding house but recommends it to a mysterious young English widow who approaches him for assistance. - Summary by Lynne Thompson (16 hr 9 min)

What a thrilling tale!

(5 Sterne)

I found this story of heir hunters and the families they hunt enthralling. Braddon's grasp of human psychology is so enjoyably described. She likes her characters and their foibles are treated gently – often with sly humour and images that make me laugh out loud. I do enjoy the way she conveys the fascination of genealogy. It continues the story begun in Birds of Prey with the French branch of the family. As usual, Braddon prepares us for the skullduggery and villainy to come but that, I think, enhances the tensions. The readers do a good job (though I find that each changeis jarring and takes getting used to).

Words words words

interesting storyline but way too long and too convoluted! one male reader almost made me stop listening because his voice just rolled on and on with no inflection. not sure why I continue to listen to this author other than I know there's no sleazy love scenes and no pathetic language. but is that a good enough reason?

Oh my word!

(5 Sterne)

I waited for this book for a couple of years, & well worth the wait! Loved it! Great readers, too. The man who did much of it is certainly a unique reader (his French is so funny!), but I really enjoyed his reading. Under-stated & subtle. Definitely listen to this series!

A worthy sequel and conclusion

(4,5 Sterne)

If you've enjoyed the 1st book of the series, "Birds of prey", don't miss this worthy sequel and conclusion, even if the main reader's drony intonation takes a while to get used to (fortunately the novel ends on Celine Major's highly enjoyable reading).

A GOOD SOCIAL INTRUIGUE

(5 Sterne)

Behind the story an interesting sight of English life in the 1860s. A nicely crafted weave of the tribulations and chance occurances with moral choices to show life from the very basest to the highest lights.

great book

(5 Sterne)

I liked the book,it kept me in the suspense all the time that I was hearing. It pleased me the ending. The readers were okay ,too slow when they were reading, sometimes I fell like I was falling asleep.

(5 Sterne)

A beautifully-wriiten character study of four "birds of prey" plus a mystery, murder and love story. This deserves to be better known.

story of two generations and an inheritance. what man will do for the love of money.
