Our Miss Brooks - 190 Episodes

(4,575 Sterne; 20 Bewertungen)

Our Miss Brooks was a hit on radio from the outset; within eight months of its launch as a regular series, the show landed several honors, including four for Eve Arden, who won polls in four individual publications of the time. Arden had actually been the third choice to play the title role. Harry Ackerman, at the time CBS's West Coast director of programming, wanted Shirley Booth for the part, but as he told historian Gerald Nachman many years later, he realized Booth was too focused on the underpaid downside of public school teaching at the time to have fun with the role.[1] Lucille Ball was believed to be the next choice, but she was already committed to My Favorite Husband and didn't audition. Then CBS chairman Bill Paley, who was friendly with Arden, persuaded her to audition for the part. With a slightly rewritten audition script---Osgood Conklin, for example, was originally written as a school board president but was now written as the incoming new Madison principal---Arden agreed to give the newly-revamped show a try.[2] Produced by Larry Berns and written by director Al Lewis, Our Miss Brooks premiered on CBS July 19, 1948. According to radio critic John Crosby, her lines were very "feline" in dialogue scenes with principal Conklin and would-be boyfriend Boynton, with sharp, witty comebacks. The interplay between the cast---blustery Conklin, nebbishy Denton, accommodating Harriet, absentminded Mrs. Davis, clueless Boynton, scheming Miss Enright---also received positive reviews. Arden won a radio listeners' poll by Radio Mirror magazine as the top ranking comedienne of 1948-1949, receiving her award at the end of an Our Miss Brooks broadcast that March. "I'm certainly going to try in the coming months to merit the honor you've bestowed upon me, because I understand that if I win this (award) two years in a row, I get to keep Mr. Boynton," she joked. But she was also a hit with the critics; a winter 1949 poll of newspaper and magazine radio editors taken by Motion Picture Daily named her the year's best radio comedienne. For its entire radio life, the show was sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive-Peet, promoting Palmolive soap, Lustre Creme shampoo and Toni hair care products. The radio series continued until 1957, a year after its television life ended.

This recording is part of the Old Time Radio collection.

Our Miss Brooks

(5 Sterne)

I discovered OMB in the 1980s and still enjoy listening to them. The writing is classic and still relatable & funny. You need to listen to more that one episode so you can learn the traits of the different characters. Not every episode is great, but some are fantastic! If only some more episodes had been saved. Maybe someday someone will find a stack of forgotten transcription discs in some warehouse or attic.

Eve Arden is Perfect as "Our Miss Brooks"

(5 Sterne)

Eve Arden was "perfect" as high school teacher Connie Brooks in this delightful program. The supporting cast was distinct in their characterizations and delivery. The plots had a similar theme, that is, Miss Brooks' romantic interest in Mr. Boynton (played first by Jeff Chandler and then Robert Rockwell) and her interactions with the principal, played by Gale Gordon. I was fortunate in listening to this program when it first started on radio until it ended some nine years later. The television version to me never captured the charm of the radio version. This program still maintains its' excellence after over half a century.

Gentle, smart humor

(5 Sterne)

. If you are weary of these modern, cynical, hard-edged times listen to this show for a little relief. Eve Arden is so perfect in this role. She is smart and witty but also vulnerable and very likable. I really enjoy how her character is able to step out of her situation and see the humor in it. She makes the listener feel like they are in a smart and witty club. And the jokes are funny! This was recorded before the era of laugh-tracks (I assume) and the audience can barely control themselves.

Have Heard A Few Episodes Of This Very Funny Show ! Look Forward To Hearing More ! "MAY-31-2017" Update ! About 6 Months Later Have Found Our Miss Brooks So Funny ! That I Am Downloading Again ! So As To Install In My Sisters Phone ! Told Her About All The Characters ! Must Admit Eve Arden Keeps Me Laughing !

Wonderful actors

(4 Sterne)

This is such a delightful show -- the actors are uniformly terrific, the writing is clever, and the characters are so well drawn. I'm pretty sure they do use a laugh track, and it can verge on overwhelming at points, but that doesn't detract from the fun of listening.

Two duplicates:

(0 Sterne)

Two duplicates: - "Our_Miss_Brooks_480919_007_Weekend_At_Crystal_Lake.mp3" is the same episode, but a much BETTER QUALITY, of "460702 An American Tragedy.mp3" - "Our_Miss_Brooks_490109_023_Boken_Furnace.mp3" is the same episode as "49-01-09_Our_Miss_Brooks_Lack_of_Coal_at_Madison_High.mp3"

one dud

As in the other large set here, Our_Miss_Brooks_531108_222_Convict is not worth a download as you simply can't hear the alleged episode.

Where's Miss Brooks???
