Makes Me Laugh -- Outloud!!
feekie
Sometimes radio programs just make me smile but Jack Benny and Dennis Day programs make me laugh out loud! I think they must have some of the same writers. Not to belabor the point, but Jack and Dennis don't use corny jokes like a lot of the old programs do. Their comedy is often very clever and would be funny today. I finally got my son (age 30) to listen to a Jack Benny program, and he was surprised at how funny the gags were. They were a little like Saturday Night Live jokes -- humor that is unexpected and a little wacky but really witty and sharp! I wish those writers were alive today -- Jack and Dennis too!
Wacky Days

Dennis Day plays a naive sodajerk boarding at the home of the parents of his girlfriend, Mildred Anderson. The show is basically a vehicle for Day's beautifully sung songs (two per show), so the storylines often aren't given enough time to fully develop. When he's not singing, Dennis is often written into scenes that require he step out of character, making the stories a bit outrageous. There is a bit of detectable writing laziness, too, as story elements are occasionally used in several different programs. Still, the performances are fine (Barbara Eiler and John Brown from The Life or Riley co-star); the jokes are funny enough (and sometimes border on the risqué); and the singing is excellent.
Dennis Day Show Is Good

Dennis Day was chosen as the 1950 entertainer of the year. He was very likeable, both on "A Day in the Life of Dennis Day," heard at least in the summer of 1949 on Saturday nights, and then the next day, Sundays during the regular seasons, on the Jack Benny Show. He had a wonderful singing voice, which was put to good use on both of these programs. Again, audiences during the 1940's and very early 1950's, were very appreciative of Dennis Day's work.
