(10 Episodes) BOB HOPE (Leslie Townes Hope - May 29, 1903 to July 27, 2003) was born in Eltham, London, England to Welsh opera singing mother, Avis Townes & British stonemason, William Henry Hope. 1908,the Hope family (Bob was the fifth of 7 sons) emigrated to America aboard the SS Philadelphia, passing thru Ellis Island gates March 30th 1908. Bob was five years old, when they left Britain, becoming a US Citizen 12 years later, at the age of 17. As a youngster, Bob earned spending money by dancing and doing comedy routines on sidewalk corners. He was one for entering talent contests - winning awards for his impersonation of Charlie Chaplin - a skit he used many times, late into his entertainment career. In 1925, with the help of silent film star Fatty Arbuckle, Hope got his big career break, when Arbuckle helped Bob & Bob's then-time partner, Lloyd "Lefty" Durbin, a steady position with "Hurley's Jolly Follies." And, as they say, history was made. Bob made Broadway appearances in the 20s & 30s and starred in countless movies from 1934 thru the 50s. Bob also was a 50 year performer for the USO, entertaining audiences for during World War II, the Korean War & during the Persian Gulf War (1990-1991). Known for his quick wit and icy kick-butt comedy, Bob was an avid golfer from the 1920s til his death. He is greatly missed by every person who has enjoyed his good gut-grabbin' humour! * SOURCE: Wikipedia OTR * def gp ddh
