Judy Garland as guest host on Bing Crosby's General Electric radio show 10-30-…

(5 Sterne)

The very first time that I heard this radio show was in December 1976 when I was a young teenage boy. My brother had given me a vinyl record for Christmas which contained this entire radio show. Nearly four decades later I am still impressed with this radio show. Judy Garland's voice is simply spectacular! It's hard to imagine that she had given birth to Lorna Luft only twenty-two days following this radio performance! Being in the latter stages of pregnancy had no effect on Ms. Garland's voice or her breath control. She delivers a stunning performance with the five songs which she sings during this radio show. Over the years I came to appreciate the entire radio show. I discovered Judd Conlon's Rhythmaires through this radio broadcast. Their rendition of "Stars Began To Fall" is sensational! Also, the commercials for General Electric are very entertaining! This nearly thirty minute radio show will certainly delight anyone who has a yearning to relive golden nostalgia from the early 1950s.

While Bing Crosby was away...

In October 1952, Bing's wife, Dixie Lee, was dying. And even though he was "transcribing" his weekly CBS General Electric radio show in advance, he had no interest in appearing on it while tending to his wife's final moments (and subsequent funeral). So, guest stars filled in while Bing was absent. There was no audience present in these programs because Crosby had already done away with a live audience [by late 1951, he preferred audience reactions dubbed in- the better to tape and edit his shows as fast and effective as possible]. So it's just Judy, or Connee, with announcer Ken Carpenter and John Scott Trotter's orchestra. Most people didn't hear these shows at the time, as television was already replacing radio as prime-time entertainment. But for those who did...including YOU...you're in for a treat.
