Marie: An Episode in the Life of the Late Allan Quatermain
H. Rider Haggard
Read by Peter John Keeble
This is a superb sweeping romantic adventure story of how Alan Quatermain, hero of fourteen of Rider H Haggard's books, met, fell in love with and married his first wife. It is related from the perspective of old age and is set against the time of the Great Trek in the 1830s. The villains of the piece are truly villainous, Dingaan a portly traitorous despotic Zulu chief, and a Portuguese killer who constantly plots to kill our hero and steal his wife.
This book is written with histrionic flair typical of the Victorian era, gripping battles combined with scenes of fervent emotion. Bigotry and hatred filter through the story, having (as they do even now) a terrible effect on all the characters who harboured such prejudices. (Summary by Peter Keeble) (9 hr 49 min)

Tragic tale of love and human cruelty
Linda Givler
even though the author tells us how this is going to end, I kept hoping it would not be so bad. H. Ryder Haggert spent much time in South Africa and it shows in his writing. His descriptions of the Zulu King were truly amazing and made me wonder how much of it could have been true. The love story is definitely y one of the classics. I really like this author and the reader was excellent
Intense moving story of love and betrayal, worth listening to.

Exceptionally well read moving story of Allan Quartermain. Honor, true love, betrayal combined with cultural differences of the time in Africa, including Zulus, Boers and English all intersected by a true villain. Dr. D.

The story was quite long, still, it was interesting and of course, crafted by a master. Written in the first person, the reader's job was very good; his British accent perfect for the part. Thank you.
Amazing piece of work
