The Life of Saint Monica
Frances Alice Forbes
Read by LibriVox Volunteers
This book is above all things the story of a mother. But it is also the story of a noble woman—a woman who was truly great, for the reason that she never sought to be so. Because she understood the sphere in which a woman's work in the world must usually lie, and led her life truly along the lines that God had laid down for her; because she suffered bravely, forgot herself for others, and remained faithful to her noble ideals, she ruled as a queen amongst those with whom her life was cast. Her influence was great and far-reaching, but she herself was the last to suspect it, the last to desire it, and that was perhaps the secret of its greatness. The type is rare at the present day, but, thank God! there are Monicas still in the world. If there were more, the world would be a better place. - Summary from the book (2 hr 7 min)

The Mother of Saint Augustine

really Good book. It's more about the trial of being the Mother of Saint Augustine of Hippo, to put his and her life in context start with The Confessions of Saint Augustine. Follow that up with the City of God by Saint Augustine. Definitely worthwhile.

I was looking for books that highlights a mother's love and prayers for her children. I am longing to look to Christian women of the past as mentors. This book was exactly that. I am so encouraged by Monica's selfless simple and quiet love and faithfulness for her husband, her mother in law, her son, her son's friends,, and all those who knew her.

I knew that Saint Monica was the mother of Saint Augustine. This book explained her holiness so that I understood how she led her husband, mother in law and son to Christ. All narrators were easy to understand.
Inspiring and uplifting!
