Another case for Reginald Brett, barrister and hobby detective: David Hume-Frazer is in some trouble. He was the prime suspect in the murder case of his cousin, Alan. Though he was never convicted, suspicion clings to him, and he wishes his name to be cleared before he marries his fiancé, Helen Layton.
The case is baffling: Alan was murdered with a Japanese knife on his own grounds, in front of the library windows -- in the same place, where four of his ancestors already died "in their boots"... (9 hr 46 min)

Reviews

superb mystery

I see that other readers have difficulty with the reader, Carolyn. If you give her at least a chapter, she begins to sound quite pleasant. Lots of characters to keep track of in this story, all with their uniqueness. Occasionally I had to review a chapter to be sure I didn't miss an important part. other than the very dated racial slurs, I thoroughly enjoy this author.

I make a point of listening to all Carolin’s narrations because I just love her voice which makes any book she narrates so enjoyable. Thanks carolin.

What a great story & so well read

(5 stars)

Apart from Louis Tracy's plots, which I enjoy enormously, I find the descriptions of daily life in his time fascinating & so well observed. And the characters he draws are so sympathetic - even the villains usually have their better side in one way or another. And I like & appreciate the way Carolin takes her time to read, to articulate each word carefully, giving us time to take what's happening on board before the next surprise is upon us.

Excellent Reading

Thank you, Carolyn, for another excellent reading of a good story. You have done a great deal for Librivox and have given much of yourself for the benefit of others. God bless you for that. This was a good story and I enjoyed listening to the explanations of deductive and inductive reasoning. I know that many others will enjoy the book and Carolyn's reading. Thanks again.

This long book is a lot of fun tho it’s necessary to exercise forebearance for the author’s intense patronizing of women, working class people and the old linoleum they insist on having in their kitchens, and of course, foreigners. But it’s still a really good story. And, besides, Carolin is the most sublime of all readers, so I’ll say no more.

TWIST UPON TURN UPON TWIST

A truly gripping mystery, surely the best of Tracy. The mystery is completely solved, the bad guys are dead, and everyone else is happy. What more could we ask? I could listen to Carolyn all day.

my ears weren't sharp enough to finish

I wasn't able to comprehend the reader enough to enjoy the book. I'm not adept at understanding some accents. Book premise sounds intriguing.

Excellent!

This was one of Mr Tracy's stellar mystery/detective stories. I thoroughly enjoyed it in its entirety. Also another solid reading performance by this Librivox volunteer!
