A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (version 2)
James Joyce
Read by Tadhg
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is Joyce’s semi-autobiographical first novel. It traces the early life of Stephen Dedalus and his inner struggle with the oppression of Irish society and the Catholic church, ending with his awakening as a poet and writer and self-imposed exile from Ireland.
“Welcome, O life, I go to encounter for the millionth time the reality of experience and to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race.”

The reader (Tadhg) is very good, one of the best I've heard. Highly recommended, especially if you want to hear Joyce read with an Irish accent.

Joyce in all his glory, told by a voice that sounds as if the author is sitting, talking next to me :)

A marvellous novel, so expressive in language, and vitally narrated with a beautiful Irish inflection.

Tadhg Hynes does a professional job with this reading, differentiating the voices of all the characters and bringing the beauty of the narrative to life. I think it's the best audiobook I've ever listened to. It's the third time I've read this book and this is by far the best experience I've had. Hynes's reading brings out so much that I hadn't noticed before.
Superb!

I read this book a few years ago and found it quite difficult going. This reading in it's native accent brought the book to life. To have all the little meanings and nuances delivered with such understanding is wonderful. If you ever wondered about Joyce but were a little intimidated do yourself a favour and try this book. I can't recommend it highly enough.
A deep diving in the nature of man

Very beautifully read. Great in elocution. Much thanks to the reader. The novel is indeed as the title suggests, the tale of a budding artist. The narrative carried out through his mind with stream of consciousness is also very well depicted.
