Gorgias

Read by Kevin Johnson

(4.5 stars; 54 reviews)

This dialogue brings Socrates face to face with the famous sophist Gorgias and his followers. It is a work likely completed around the time of "Republic" and illuminates many of the spiritual ideas of Plato. The spirituality, as Jowett points out in his wonderful introduction, has many ideas akin to Christianity, but is more generous as it reserves damnation only for the tyrants of the world. Some of the truths of Socrates, as presented by Plato, shine forth in this wonderful work on sophistry and other forms of persuasion or cookery. (Summary by Kevin Johnson) (7 hr 6 min)

Creepy Voice but it is Free

(2 stars)

I had to listen to this book for a class I am taking titled 'The Birth of Learning.' The professor recommended this one because it is free to the public, but let me tell you: by the 3rd segment you won't even feel human anymore. The reader's voice sounds so digital and monotone that I really thought it was a computer reading. Listening to this on the subway to work really will make you feel like you are in an alternate reality, separate from the normal public.

Very good reading

I like that the reader identified who was talking each time. I was able to keep up and it helped that the gentleman read at a normal speed and had a nice tone.

Very good

Well Paced

(4 stars)

Introduction is nice, but certainly not needed in just read for pleasure. Reader is well paced with only minor hiccups once or twice in the entire book.

Excellent reading & dialogue

(5 stars)

I don't think I truly appreciated Plato's brilliance until I listened to this searching inquiry into the good, true and just.
