(4.8 stars; 75 reviews)

Ball of Fat is a poignant short story by renowned French author Guy de Maupassant, set against the backdrop of the Franco-Prussian War. The narrative follows a group of travelers, including the titular character, a plump and compassionate prostitute named Élisabeth Rousset, as they navigate the complexities of morality, sacrifice, and social class during a time of conflict.

As the group finds themselves stranded in a hostile town, they must confront their prejudices and the harsh realities of war. Élisabeth, initially scorned by her fellow travelers, becomes a pivotal figure when her willingness to help is put to the test. Maupassant masterfully explores themes of honor, betrayal, and the human condition, revealing the often hypocritical nature of society.

With its rich character development and sharp social commentary, Ball of Fat stands out as a critical reflection on the impact of war on individuals and their relationships. This story not only showcases Maupassant's literary prowess but also invites listeners to ponder the moral dilemmas faced in times of crisis.

Quaint and very well narrated! Sad and funny, clever and quick. Full of Napoleonic era quips and quirks. It's certainly sexist from our modern perspective, so take this as a trigger warning for those who might need it regarding sexual exploitation and coersion.

Oh how realism devours

A story too realistic that each word is bleak and grim, for life is sad. Excellent reading
