Diary of a Pilgrimage

Read by Szindbad

(4.7 stars; 38 reviews)

A possibly fictionalised account by the comic novelist Jerome K. Jerome of a trip to Germany that he undertook with a friend in order to see the famous Passion Play at Oberammergau. The journey takes in London, Dover, Ostend, Cologne, Munich, Oberau, Oberammergau and then back to London via Heidelberg. As one might expect from the author of 'Three Men in a Boat', much goes wrong along the way, including seasickness, strange food, stranger beds, misleading guidebooks, bewildering train timetables, and numerous cultural and linguistic misunderstandings. Very enjoyable!

Jerome K. Jerome starts out saying he's writing a serious travelogue - but can JKJ ever be really serious? His ability to see the funny side of things creates a very enjoyable account of his trip to rural Germany. Did all events happen exactly as he writes them? Probably not. But that's beside the point. Very well read. I felt like JKJ was doing the reading.

Great Read!

This is one of my favorite LibriVox titles! The reader has an amazing voice, and the story is engaging and interesting. Definitely recommend listening to this one. Jerome K Jerome was an incredible writer, and makes you feel like you're actually there with him wherever he's writing about.

great book, great narration
