John Wood Campbell Jr. and John Wood Campbell, Jr.
Read by KirksVoice
A sky pirate armed with superior weapons of his own invention... First contact with an alien race dangerous enough to threaten the safety of two planets... The arrival of an unseen dark sun whose attendant marauders aimed at the very end of civilization in this Solar System. These were the three challenges that tested the skill and minds of the brilliant team of scientist-astronauts Arcot, Wade, and Morey. Their initial adventures are a classic of science-fiction which first brought the name of their author, John W. Campbell, into prominence as a master of the inventive imagination. Reviews
excellent

it's a great book and really good narration, a must read series make sure to look up the author on librivox by the different author spellings below to hear the series what of it thats on librivox --- in addition its rather annoying that : "John W. Campbell", "John Wood jr Campbell", and "John Wood Campbell jr" are all listed as different authors in librivox and they really aren't as far as i can tell since all the books/stories are set in the same world and or series and theme this really does need correction.....
Good story - a bit science heavy

Earth has finally begun exploring beyond to other planets. In doing so, a Venusian race is saved from attack. They make friends with Venus only to discover that a more deadly race of aliens is coming to attack Earth. The target? The sun, which the alien race no longer has. Can Earth muster enough forces to defeat the invaders? There are many subplots in this story, and a lot of science is included in the different chapters. It is not your typical story, but reads like a cross between a sci-fi, a science book, and a historical novel. The reader is excellent, and I hope he continues to read for LV, he has a great voice and cadence.
What a great romp through the stars!

I knew nothing of this author before selecting to experience this classic sci-fi title. I really enjoyed the work, especially in the context of its writing and publishing era. Campbell did a wonderful job of being forward-thinking, and even relevant, with his story—IMO. He fluently described what was then very futuristic concepts, so many of which have now been revealed or discovered, and many of which are being investigated or researched right now. It seems like I can recognize some similar theoretical musings in quite a few sci-fi films—both classic and more contemporary. In my mind's eye I had visions of many vintage, retro, and modern images flashing about in my head as I listened to the work. I disagreed though, that the story concluded by the means presented. The denouement seemed too brief while not being quite succinct enough. I still had questions of the story. I yearned to hear more about the revelations experienced on both sides of the final conflict. The reader did a fine job, easy to listen to.
Good story

The author really knows a lot about science, electronics, physics, etc. and it comes through in his writing, which has a lot of technical jargon in it, and a lot of scientific theory. But somehow it doesn’t take away from the story too much. There’s a lot to enjoy here.
Dated, but it holds up

Some things are really dated (thinking radio waves from Venus would reach earth in a timely fashion, for example) but overall, very good. It starts off somewhere very different from where it ends but it's a fun story. If you like science fiction, you'll more than likely enjoy this book. Good reader, good story, and it's 7 hours so you can knock this one out in one shift. I highly recommend it.
well read old fashioned ray gun sci-fi
Akku
The reader is not one I’m familiar with, but will check for more by him. He has a very warm and comforting style which I liked. The story is the first in a series by this author, and incredible feats are done by Arcot, Wade and Moore (I probably spelt their names wrong) and science saves the day over and over. Good old fashioned heroic romp in space.
fantastic story!
Areyouinhere
this was such a wonderful story!I had read the second book in the series before knowing there was a first and the third. I wish I would have known and started with this one. these stories are such wonders of a Time past or science-fiction was new and offered such a brilliant idea of new races New people's new planets and so on. I look forward to listening to the next one!
sub-Genre Needed!
Kymis
This is called "Hard SciFi" dear listener. LibV should subclassify SciFi into it's several subcategory's. To help non generalist read only the types they enjoy. But many of us enjoy all the types, I encourage you to try this also. But "JWCJr" is one of the best of them. And this is one of the best of his.
