"Not long ago, having published two narratives of voyages in the Pacific, which, in many quarters, were received with incredulity, the thought occurred to me, of indeed writing a romance of Polynesian adventure, and publishing it as such; to see whether, the fiction might not, possibly, be received for a verity: in some degree the reverse of my previous experience...This thought was the germ of others, which have resulted in Mardi" (Herman Melville, Preface). Reviews

Justin’s review : Mardi volume 1

(4 stars)

This book gives insight into Melville’s Polynesia. Unlike Typee, or Omoo it is fictional. It is also the longest of the three books. It could use chapter names along with Roman numerals. Everything was great, except, occasionally when I went to another app the book stopped playing. The solution is completely closing the app and reopening. Otherwise the storyline is fantastic. The book commences in the adventure genre, then turns into a romance, and finally philosophical literature, mostly from Babalanja. The romance is a search for Yillah, a young maiden. It is full of songs and poems from Yumi. An important detail is that the characters chose the names of native Gods, though they are actually people. Overall LibriVox presents a great way to listen to expertly crafted books and it could improve the audio quality.
