Michael Kohlhaas (English Translation)
Heinrich von Kleist
Read by Greg W.
Michael Kohlhaas is a powerful novella that explores the depths of justice and the human spirit through the story of a horse dealer in 16th-century Germany. When Michael Kohlhaas's horses are unjustly seized by a nobleman, his quest for reparation spirals into a relentless pursuit of justice that challenges the very fabric of society.
Heinrich von Kleist's narrative is marked by a striking blend of existential reflection and historical context, presenting Kohlhaas as a figure of both tragedy and defiance. As he navigates the complexities of law and morality, the novella raises profound questions about the nature of justice and the cost of vengeance.
With its modern themes and stylistic innovations, Michael Kohlhaas has influenced generations of writers, including Franz Kafka, who found deep resonance in its exploration of the human condition. This thought-provoking work invites listeners to reflect on the implications of Kohlhaas's actions and the societal structures that govern our lives.
