Soldier Boy is the top steed at Fort Paxton. He is Buffalo Bill’s favorite horse and has led a life of glory and honor. One day General Alison’s orphaned niece arrives and proceeds to charm every man, woman, and beast for miles around including Soldier Boy. Buffalo Bill takes her under his wing and ultimately “lends” her Soldier Boy so that they may seek adventure together. Oh My Goodness! This must have been a classic, but I've never heard of it. Perhaps because of the turn it takes. I give it 5 stars because it was so well read by Gregg Margarite. He has that Mr. Ed kind of voice, and the reading was clear and not hurried. It was a little confusing at times because Twain didn't always say who was speaking. I went to the text a few times to clear that up for myself. Mark Twain pulls no punches in addressing the awful cruelty of man, so beware of the ending!
