Love hate relationship with this book

(4 stars)

The slipper of a prophet has been stolen and brought to a museum. The followers of that prophet seek to retrieve that slipper, and will stop at nothing to do it, including murder. Professor Cavanagh becomes the keeper of that slipper and finds himself pursued by thieves, religious fanatics, and a mysterious woman with violet eyes. I liked the mystery of this book, and I liked the reader, the book was wonderfully read. I found some of the scenes annoying because the hero was a bit of a clodpole at times. All in all it was a mostly good book with a neat ending. Kudos to the reader for her excellent voice which fit in well with the tone of the story. A mildly tinny sound on the recording; GE filtered it out fine.

I agree!

I agree completely with the first reviewer. I love Sax Rohmer's books, and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this reading. Thank you to the reader and Librivox.

BETTER THAN FU MANCHU

(5 stars)

Fu Manchu doubtless lent itself easily to the movies. but this tale, very similar in essence, was much better. Rohmer has great imaginative powers which enable him to tell stories through brief moments of peril or perplexity. This would not succeed with everyone, but it does with him. And it certainly does not hurt that the narration is perfection itself, both in pace and tone.

(1 stars)

Boring plot and repetitive events. This was my first novel by Sax Rohmer and probably the last! i guess having gone through novels from H. Rider Haggard, this novel did not meet the same standards. Reader though did a good job.

(5 stars)

Elaine's narration is incomparable and spell binding. I will listen to anything she reads and was fortunate enough to follow up her readings of the Fu Manchu adventures with this masterpiece of suspense from Sax Rohmer

great narration, good story

(4 stars)

Narrator is absolute joy to listen to. the storyline though is not that exciting or out of the ordinary. it's almost predictable Ford most parts
