Olive

Read by Arielle Lipshaw

(4.3 stars; 42 reviews)

Inspired by Jane Eyre, Dinah Maria Craik's 1850 novel, Olive, was one of the first to feature a disabled central character. 'Slightly deformed' from birth, Olive believes that she will never be able to marry like other women, so she devotes her life to her art, her mother, and above all, her religion. It takes a dark secret from the past and a new, fascinating acquaintance, to make her realize what her life could be. (Summary by Arielle Lipshaw) (14 hr 3 min)

Whew. Almost wish I had bailed on this one. If you enjoy hours of noble suffering, plus a goodly dose of lovers who continually just miss understanding each other, seasoned with Victorian morals and ideas of a woman's place, then have at it. Maybe I simply need more cheerful books at present, but this doesn't make my read-again-someday list. (The reader was excellent.)

lovely voice

(5 stars)

what an amazing narrator! I hope to hear more from her. She does excellent character voices which really bring the story to life and her narration is soothing and well enunciated. The recording is also very clear and without any background noises. The story itself is also lovely and it's nice to see a disabled protagonist portrayed in a favourable light, something quite unusual in Victorian literature.

Excellent reader, difficult book.

the reader is excellent and she deserves a medal for completing this. I confess that I enjoyed the first half, I was still with it for the next quarter, but the last quarter of the book was painful and contrived. I think if the author had wound it up three quarters through I would be giving the book five stars.

Great reader!

This is a touching story, and the reader has done a fantastic job. She has a beautiful voice, intonation and a natural way of delivering the dialogue.

Sweet Story

(5 stars)

You can guess the end but it is a slow winding tale that keeps you wondering how it all will unfold & the reader is excellent
