Grant has a wry turn of phrase and an eye for the humorous - as well as giving his memories of the Mexican and American Civil Wars. He also has a nice line in self-deprecation. The reader's voice and style are well-suited to the material. As a solo reading this was a major task well performed - thanks to Jim Clevenger

Ulysses Grant's Civil WR memoirs deserve their enduring reputation as an outstanding source of information and insight into the author, his experience as an officer and commanding general in the Civil War, and the times he lived in. Grant's writing is antique, but always clear and accessible as well as informed and interesting. If there's a challenge with this book, it's the inability to examine maps corresponding to place names while listening to it. This liability is more than compensated for by the pleasure of listening to Jim Clevenger's mellifluous delivery - soothing, balanced, and sympathetic at the same time. I bow to both the memory of the author and to the reader. Thank you, Mr. Clevenger; it has been a great pleasure spending time with you these weeks while doing cardio at the gym. Much appreciated!

Mr. Grant’s memoir transports you to the earliest years of the United States of America. You witness through his eyes the Spanish American War, Great Rebellion, and personal memories with Abraham Lincoln that leave you more enchanted with Mr. Lincoln and what could have been had Mr. Lincoln not been assassinated. You walk away from this book feeling as if you know the man, US Grant, and know the people he knew intimately by association included General Sherman, General Sheridan, General Halleck, and Mr. Lincoln himself. Mr. Clevenger affects a very genuine reading of Mr. Grant’s memoirs and you feel as if the voice you hear is exactly that of Mr. Grant. Now that I have finished listening, I feel a sense of sadness that the history and memoir has come to a close.

Enjoyed the insights into great historical event through the eyes of intelligent person. His views and opinions seemed very level headed and unbiased. Even though this book is extremely long, I very much enjoyed it because of the level of detail, engaging storytelling and just as important - superb reader skills of Jim Clevenger who took incredible amount of time to nail it all by himself! Thank you!
