The Blue Lagoon

(4.7 stars; 139 reviews)

Two shipwrecked children grow up on a South Pacific island. This beautiful story of adventure and innocent love was H.D. Stacpoole’s most popular work.

Parents who may have seen the Hollywood film need not be anxious about the book's suitability for kids -- the author's treatment of adolescent sexuality is almost mystical and very mild. The story of The Blue Lagoon (1908) continues in The Garden of God (1923) and The Gates of Morning (1925). A ship’s doctor, Henry De Vere Stacpoole (1863–1951) published over 90 works of fiction, poetry, autobiography, and translation. (Summary by Adrian Praetzellis) (7 hr 38 min)

What a Surprise!

(5 stars)

Hated the movie but loved this book. Not thought provoking but a throughly enjoyable listen. I'm a big fan of the reader and am currently listening my way through his offerings.

heart wrenching story

a wonderful job by the reader! perfect. this book is not like the movies i have seen of same/similar name. this is a wonderful tale of a sea voyage, then morphs to gripping thoughts while in the small boats with an in between time of a wonderful simple life on an island. a charming story for adults or young adults, children may be disturbed by the tragedies chronicled in the story.

Amazingly Good!

If not for the reviews I’d never listened to this book and it would have been my loss. The story is quite simply beautiful and Adrian Praetzellis is one of the best narrators I’ve heard on LibriVox or anywhere else. The prose and Adrian's voice transports one to the island and all its beauty and danger. It is a beautiful experience. Thank you Mr. Praetzellis I’m forever grateful.

Disappointed by the ending.

(4 stars)

Spoiler alert! I loved the book all the way through, but the ending was a real disappointment for me. I felt like the author was drawing us into the story and making us root for the protagonists, and then he totally pulled the rug out from under us at the end of the book. Left me feeling numb. Great narration though.

I wanted to listen to this because I always thought the idea behind the movie was interesting. In the process, I have fallen in love with Adrian Praetzellis as a reader...and I’m off to track down more books he’s read!

Fantastic

Great reading. Fairly entertaining. Some beautiful scenes described. Moved a little slow for me but overall enjoyed it.
