Reviews
well read, not overly sappy romance
jaded_grl
very well read. a wonderful recording. this is a story of romance, so not sure if anyone besides ladies maybe interested in it. the love story is not to sappy, toned down by the reality of poverty and just trying to make ends meet... a sick child... and war looming in the distance.
Captures the mood of the time

Once again, Maryann has captured the mood of this novel beautifully. This is the story of intelligent, talented, sensitive, committed young people at a time when the world is on the verge of an event that will have an impact on every aspect of their lives. It’s interesting that the story is set in Germany. Books written around this period tend to be formulaic—valiant, doomed heroes and heroines about to be shattered by the brutality of war. This story portrays an aspect of pre-war Germany that’s more nuanced and interesting. There are no caricatures in this story. Even the villains have relatable feelings. Maryann does an outstanding job of conveying themes that are more complex than the usual Rinehart plots. Her reading adds a dimension to the story that makes it more meaningful. Thank you very much Maryann.
Charming story, well read

I thoroughly recommend this romantic novel. Listeners must park their modern sensibilities outside, however, for as in the world of Thomas Hardy, this tale has some morally dubious characters. Sometimes you just want to shake one or other of them, particularly a certain amoral young man. It is rather sad at times - at the end of one chapter one can hear that the reader is quite affected. The reader has a soothing voice and an American accent that's smooth and pleasant to hear even to the Brit ear. Thanks to MaryAnn for a sensitive reading and good audio quality. Okay but not Great

Nice story but definitely not one of Rinehart's finest. It was a little sappy for me and seemed to drag depressingly longer than necessary. The Amazing Interlude was much more enjoyable.
