Cleek: The Man of the Forty Faces

Read by Ruth Golding

(4.8 stars; 301 reviews)

Meet Hamilton Cleek - man of mystery, and master of disguise and derring-do.

Cleek's exploits are, to say the least, highly improbable, but the book is enormous fun. The goodies are good and the baddies are very bad indeed, but beware - things are not always what they seem. Suspend your disbelief and enjoy a rattling good yarn!

Cleek is the central figure in dozens of short stories that began to appear in 1910 and were subsequently collected in a series of books. (Summary by Ruth Golding and Wikipedia) (13 hr 24 min)

A Cracking Great Series of Stories !!

(5 stars)

Read with the addition of a variety of voices (consistently done throughout) really helps the read-aloud stories almost become a play inside your head, with a variety of actors (readers). We are lucky indeed to have Ruth Golding do the readings for this book. The stories are classic mysteries (locked room, disappearances, obscure references, clues dropped within conversation etc) WITH romance mixed in: with unspoken promises, touching hands producing paroxysms of joy and all the usual twaddle of that time. No passionate loves scenes here! But, being an incurable old romantic as well as an old fart, I enjoyed these immensely. ENCORE!!

Very good collection of detective cases, for thief turned police helper. Cleek once the very clever uncacthable thief is now the bad guys worst nightmares. Very great reading by Ruth Golding, one of Librivox's awesome mystery readers. My first exprience with the Cleek collection. The narrator Ruth Golding I have heard before excellent narrator adds to all of the works she tackles. Thanks Ruth and Librivox for a most enjoyable experience. Give a listen for a enjoyable time!

I love Cleek he is like a chameleon and you never know what he does next. Also, the woman reading this book is amazing, she gives the story life.

Must have more!

What a spectacular book by and amazing reader! This is definitely one you'll want to listen to, especially if you like mystery novels such as Sherlock Holmes. At the time of writing this (02/17/2018) Ruth has three other Cleek books in her collection: "The Riddle of the Frozen Flame", "The Purple Emperor", and "Cleek of Scotland Yard". Ruth, I implore you, please continue adding Cleek books to your collection there are so many in the series, and you do a fantastic job!

An excellent story, and an excellent reader

Cleek's stories were one's I had heard of but never read. It was great getting a chance to hear the start of this excellent series. Ruth Golding's reading was magnificent. Her characters were well differentiated, but each was understandable and felt real. The whistle in the beginning of the prologue was particularly well done.

If every reader had the talent to present every book produced by Libre no listener would be disappointed by one of these old treasures. Evidently Ms. Golden spends much time studying each character, developing each voice and making them come to life. I truly appreciate all the work she has done. I believe she could read the Oxford dictionary or World Book Encyclopedia and make either exciting. Thank you so much for allowing me to share this time with her.

This is just the beginning! What a terrific series, with an amazing vocal performance, by a Volunteer! This is LibriVox at its best. Worth every single moment or listening. "Cleek of Scotland Yard" continues the exploits of our Hero, and you will not be disappointed!
