The Tragic Bride
Francis Brett Young
Read by Roger Melin
The story centers on Gabrielle Hewish, only and lonely child of Sir Jocelyn Hewish, a loveable lush and owner of the peaceful Roscarna estate nestled in the Irish countryside. In due course, young Gabrielle falls in love with a Navy man whose untimely demise sends her into a depression, and the consequences of which alter her future, culminating in a fascinating and quite unpredictable relationship with Mrs. Payne and her troubled son Arthur. A story of understanding in it's finest sense and aptly titled, The Tragic Bride is both interesting as a story and telling as a character study. (Summary by Roger Melin) (6 hr 13 min)

Hard to explain why I gave it a 3

As always Roger Melin is an excellent narrator. The story itself is odd and quite frankly very uncomfortable to listen to sometimes. There is a small part in it that has to do with animal cruelty that was very, very upsetting. I find it hard to understand how the main character Gabrielle could ever forgive Arthur for that particular incident. The story ends rather abruptly as well leaving you with a rather unsatisfied feeling. I would say it is worth listening to but if you are sensitive like I am about animals, you might want to skip this one.
Heart Wrenching Tale

As another reviewer states there is an animal cruelty passage in the book. There is only one and it is brief and serves to depict the mental and moral state of the young man who is integral to the story. The book is a heartbreaking tale of the result of the unbearable and isolated upbringing of Grabrielle Hewish and the tragic loss of love. It is a unique story that, once invested, one cannot put down. The Tragic Bride has a depth that is merely hinted at by its title. With the exceptional narration of Roger Melin its a must read.
Tragic it is!!

Once you start, you really can't stop! Hoping something changes for this poor woman! Well, it doesn't. It just gets worse for her! This is definitely NOT a feel-good story!! After finishing the book, I just want to cry! Roger Melin is an amazing reader!!
