Varney, the Vampyre Vol. 3
Thomas Peckett Prest
Read by LibriVox Volunteers
This is volume 3 of 3. -- Originally published as a penny dreadful from 1845 until 1847, when it first appeared in book form, Varney the Vampyre is a forerunner to vampire stories such as Dracula, which it heavily influenced.
Flora Bannersworth is attacked in her own room in the middle of the night, and although her attacker is seemingly shot dead, the body is nowhere to be found. The discovery of two small bite marks on Flora's neck leads Mr Marchdale, an old friend of the family, to the conclusion that she was bitten by a vampire. While Flora recovers, her brother Henry and Mr Marchdale begin their hunt for the vampire. Their suspicions soon fall on the mysterious Sir Francis Varney, who has just bought an old abbey near Bannersworth Hall, and who bears an uncanny resemblance to Marmaduke Bannersworth, a long-dead ancestor of the family. Varney the Vampyre, Vol 3 Review
May Jones
Varney all but disappeared in the readings of Volume 2, and I almost lost interest in the voluminous chapters and began to wonder why the series (Volumes 1, 2, and 3) were even called such. however, near the end of Volume 2, Varney "reappeared" in the stories! Volume 3 is more attuned to him. The alternate title "Feast of Blood" is less befitting as Varney barely "feasts" in any of the volumes! Maybe it's just me. I'm an avid vampire lover, and Varney was (1) dragged out, too wordy, a bit boring, and a tad more interesting. Some narrators were very hard to listen to and understand (thick accents) and I lost interest while they read. But, I hung on until the end. The end was extremely abrupt but not too surprising. I'm not a lover of gore but of horror stories. Varney is a "lightly salted" horror story that plays at horror and I guess more suited to an earlier time in history where it would be better suited. Still l, my love of vampires kept me rooted enough until the end of the series. It was "decent."
My Opinion on Varney The Vampire
Peter The Reader
Most of this reads like a Soap Opera and is very ridiculous and contrived parts of it were interesting and I liked the ending and the chapters preceding it because they were about Oliver Cromwell deposing Charles I and then Charles II coming back to England. But most of it is very plodding
Very long...but I enjoyed it!

A collection of "penny dreadful" stories. I enjoyed it immensely although some of the readers were hard to understand. Well worth over 60 hours if my time!
Great story

Loved all 3 volumes. great story. but some of the readers have a very thick accent that you can barely understand what they are saying.

237 chapters, 3 book series !!! Well worth the time it takes as it keeps your interest peaked in nearly every chapter !!! You swing between rooting for the poor victims and their families, and then rooting for the vampire to escape captivity !!! Sincere Thank Youâs to all the wonderfully dedicated and talented narrators involved in this selection !!! Iâm going to save these 3 in my Favorites for another listen, soon !!!
