Menace from the Sea
Linda in PNW
An interesting account of opium addicts in London of yesteryear. I have heard about this in enough books that I believe it was true. On top of that history lesson comes a walking mummy like being intent of becoming ruler of the earth. Never a dull moment as our hero attempts to foil the plot while, of course, falling in love. Excellent narrator but Mark is always great.
Dated in respect to descriptions of Race yet prescient still

With respect to racial descriptions I did not find this book held up but the drug den descriptions were vivid and nastolgic to the modern day fentanyl dens. Howard is clearly recollecting a lived experience that is valid to a form I am familiar too. Now in recovery I found this a deeply important read and I'm glad it is given space here despite the esoteric views on race.

period prejudices in this piece are discomforting and flagrant stereotypes are rampant.
