Chekhov's classic play, The Seagull, is transposed to the West of Ireland in 1896. Social unrest and a crumbling society form the background to personal turmoil as Isobel Desmond, a great actress of the London stage, returns to her Irish estate and a family trapped in a complex and vicious circle.
This production features a talented cast including Anna Massey, Alan Rickman, Dominic Guard, Fiona Victory, T.P. McKenna, Kate Binchy, Alan MacNaughtan, Maggie McCarthy, Sean Barrett, Tony Doyle, and Breffni McKenna. Directed by David Hitchinson, this is a Radio 4/World Service production.

This was my first encounter with Chekhov and this play. I listened to it on the radio while picking blackberries one summer. Anna Massey is exquisite in the ‘Arkadina’ character. Started my love affair with Chekhov
