John Buchan - Mr Standfast

(4.7 stars; 31 reviews)

Mr. Standfast is John Buchan's First World War thriller, dramatised by Bert Coules. In this gripping tale, Richard Hannay is ordered to pose as a pacifist and sent to Glasgow, where he encounters a teenage British Secret Service agent who will change the course of his life.

As the story unfolds, Hannay pursues the German spy Moxon Ivery to France, with Mary Lamington offering herself as bait in a deadly trap. This nail-biting adventure not only showcases thrilling battles but also delves into characterisation and philosophy, making it a captivating sequel to The Thirty-Nine Steps.

Published in 1919, Mr Standfast is one of Buchan's most enduring works, blending suspense with political commentary, and remains a testament to the author's popularity.

Mr Standfast satisfies.

Just what I needed, action adventure, romance, heroics, but no blood and guts, or gratuitous violence or vulgarity. My hope is that I’ll get to read all the rest of Buchan’s works before I go.

Poor second...to 39 steps.
