A Woman's War

(4.2 stars; 11 reviews)

The fictional small English country town of Roxton boasts two doctors. This tale focuses on the struggles of their wives: Katherine and the "good" Dr. James Murchison and Betty and the "bad" Dr. Parker Steele. But, of course, no one is all good or all bad and there are hurdles to overcome, in this case in the form of alcoholism. The cost of the war between the two women is greater than either woman imagined. Deeping draws on his experiences as the son of a doctor in portraying some of the less pleasant facts of physiological reality, maybe more than in many other fictional works in this engrossing and heart-wrenching tale. - Summary by Lynne Thompson (9 hr 21 min)

Excellent story

(4 stars)

Dr. Murchison and his wife are well-esteemed. He's a knowledgeable, compassionate doctor with a perfect family...and a sudden flaring up of hereditary alcoholism. Kate Murchison supports and helps her husband to try to beat the curse. Dr. Steele and his wife are competitive and ambitious, and Betty Steele has a deep-seated, vindictive hatred of Kate. When Dr. Murchison's Achilles heel starts to manifest itself, Betty Steele uses it to ruin the Murchisons. But that's not the end of the story. This is a tale of redemption, faithfulness, selfishness, revenge, and poetic justice. An excellent story that challenges us in our own motivations and ambitions, and in our loyalty and faith in those we love. I agree that chapter 5 could use a re-record. The sound quality is poor. However, the reading overall is excellent.

I almost gave up listening to this book because it was so dark. But I’m glad I stayed with it. The book was very good as was the reader.

chapter 5 is very difficult to listen to because of the poor quality of the recording. In general though, this is well read.
