The Witness for the Defence

Read by Nicholas Clifford (1930-2019)

(4.6 stars; 188 reviews)

Part romance, part mystery, part courtroom and quasi-courtroom drama. Young love reignites itself after a hiatus of some years. Or does it? Much can change in that time -- both to the people themselves, and to the events that shape their lives. The action moves from England to India, and back again, confronting the protagonists with problems they never dreamed they’d have to face. ( Nicholas Clifford) (7 hr 57 min)

Suspense & Romance

(5 stars)

This is a smart, suspenseful, romance with morality & self sacrifice woven expertly through the pages. The LibriVox Volunteer, Professor Nicholas Clifford, narrates beautifully. Throughout this story, I was invested in the characters, curious as to just what would happen next, and never disappointed as the book unfolded. Well worth anyone's time.

Enjoyable

(4.5 stars)

Good tale with a few turns, if not quite surprising enough to be "twists". Largely a pleasant book despite revolving around a death from unnatural causes. Given the action moves from India to Britain a bit, worth noting that this is very much the era of colonial India and is depicted as such, though not in great detail. So when I say pleasant, I mean the overall tone and sentiment rather than any and every scene (there are some tense and unpleasant scenes between a married couple, for example). Good resolution to the novel as a whole, very much in keeping. Tremendously well read.

Thrilling

What a brilliant story! For me it took some time for it to warm up, and perhaps the really intriguing twists & turns come in the later chapters, but the build up of tension is thrilling. Many thanks to Richard Clifford for an excellent reading. And many thanks once again to Librivox et al for introducing me to these long dead authors. I wish today's tv & film producers would use them instead of the thin, hackneyed, worn out plots based on themes like sex, violence & drugs they seem to prefer.

terrific plot

Terrific at all points; I figured the twist outcomes several times and was wrong at each turn. As always the reader was able to interpret the mood and carry the interests into each caveat and enhance the listening. I will miss him and am thankful for each of his readings.

One of the BEST stories I have listened to in a while. The death is only the vehicle for a RICH narrative! Thank you Reader...you do the voices just right. thank you librivox. I suffered from sleep deprivation...this app has changed all of that! God's blessings on all who make it possible!

engrossing story

(4.5 stars)

The book tells a tale that keeps you wondering about more than one thing up to the end. The story is a little dark but retains a lot of humanity. It is beautifully read, as always with Nicholas Clifford.

An enjoyable read ... beyond my expectation!

I felt that I was "present" in every scene of the story - thanks so much to Nicholas! Just a note re the upload ... many of the sections have been doubled up.

Great suspense

This story caught me in the first few minutes and refused to let go. The answer to every question posed another one, right through to the end. And as always Nicholas Clifford's reading was flawless.
