Cousin Pons

Read by Bruce Pirie

(4.7 stars; 51 reviews)

Cousin Pons is one of the final works in Balzac's long novel series titled The Human Comedy. It was published in 1847, along with Cousin Betty, as one of a complementary pair of novels, collectively titled Poor Relations. While Cousin Betty tells the story of a bitter woman who seeks revenge on her wealthier relations, in Cousin Pons, Balzac turns to the story of an timid, innocent man who is exploited and victimized by the wealthier members of his extended family.

Balzac offers probing character portraits and an indictment of greed and materialism in this detailed portrait of mid-19th-century French life. He is considered one of the finest European novelists of his century and a significant influence on the development of literary realism. (Summary by Bruce Pirie) (0 hr 46 min)

Amazing Story

(5 stars)

Be prepared to be charmed by a character you won’t soon forget. Cousin Pons is a man of depth, honesty and decency. He has a talent for recognizing artistic talent that escapes the shallowness of others. This story is an integral piece to Balzac's "The Human Comedy" and is well read by Mr. Pirie. Heartbreaking and fabulous. I wept.

It's hard to listen to a novel in which all kinds of greed, evil, and treachery win out so absolutely in the end.
