Alban Goodier, S.J.
Alban Goodier (1869–1939) was an English Jesuit priest and writer whose work brings Catholic teaching to readers through the life of Christ and the practice of faith. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1892 and later taught at Stonyhurst College. In 1919 he became Archbishop of Bombay, a post he held until 1926. His writing belongs to a tradition of devotional theology that seeks not only to explain religious belief but to make it vivid and meaningful in daily life. Goodier’s experience as a teacher and church leader informed a style aimed at readers looking for both clear instruction and spiritual reflection.
Goodier’s books include The Public Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ, The Passion of Jesus Christ, and The Blessed Virgin Mary. Their subjects show his sustained attention to the Gospel narratives and to the figures at the heart of Christian devotion. He writes in an accessible, reflective manner, drawing readers toward close consideration of familiar religious stories rather than relying on technical argument. For listeners curious about Catholic devotional writing from the early twentieth century, these books offer a direct introduction to Goodier’s interests and voice.
